Meaning: Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century), an authority on neo-Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on 37th latitude, the diagram (±) represents “scholar”.

Description:

Start in ready stance B

  1. Turn 90 degrees counter-clockwise into a right back stance towards B and left arm middle block
  2. Slide the left foot out into a left front stance and right hand low upset spear while bringing left hand to right shoulder
  3. Bring the left foot to the right foot to form a closed stance facinging D while executing a right hand back fist and left arm low block at the same time Perform in slow motion
  4. Step right foot out into left back stance towards A and right arm middle block
  5. Slide right foot out into a right front stance and left-hand low upset spear while bringing right hand to left shoulder
  6. Bring the right foot to the left foot to form a closed stance facing D while executing a left hand back fist and a right arm low block at the same time Perform in slow motion
  7. Step forward towards D into a left front stance and low X-block
  8. Without stepping twin high punch
  9. Right foot front kick keeping the position of the hands as they were in previous step
  10. Lower the right foot into a right front stance towards D and right hand middle punch
  11. Without stepping left hand middle punch
  12. Turn 90 degrees counter-clockwise and bring the left foot to the right foot forming a closed stance facing B while bringing both fist to your hips simultaneously. Perform in slow motion
  13. Step right foot forward into a middle stance and mountain block
  14. Step left foot around turning 180 degrees clockwise and mountain block
  15. Step left foot around turning 180 degrees clockwise and mountain block
  16. Step right foot around turning 180 degrees counter-clockwise and mountain block

  29. Jump forward towards C forming a right X-stance and low X-block
  30. Turning 90 clockwise step the right for into a right front stance towards C and right arm reinforced middle block
  31. Turn 270 degrees counter-clockwise into a right back stance towards B while executing a double low knife-hand guarding block
  32. Slide left foot out into a left front stance towards B while performing a right arm circular block
  33. Bring the left foot to the right foot and then step the right foot into a left back stance towards A at the same time executing a double low knife-hand guarding block
  34. Slide right foot out into a right front stance towards A while performing left circular block
  35. Pivot feet into a left front stance and right arm circular block

  37. Step right foot on line to form a middle stance and right-hand middle punch
